Karen
holds a B.A. degree in English from Fordham University
(Marymount), and worked for the Chase Bank in NYC as a
second Vice President, Communications Consultant and
Managing Editor of Chase Directions, the bank's
flagship publication. She presently works in Special
Education.
During
her time on the Council, Karen has liaised with the town
Planning Board, Communications Commission, Schools,
Department of Public Works, Senior Center, Community
Organizations, Public Safety, and Administration.
In addition to serving as a Borough Council member, she
served eight years on the K-8 Board of Education including
two as president, gaining extensive knowledge of contract
negotiations and health insurance issues along the way.
Karen also served six years on the executive board of the
Indian Hills High School PTSO, the last two as president,
as the recording secretary of the Communications
Commission and as editor of the town newsletter, Crossroads.
“My
family has lived in Oakland for 24 years and we are no
strangers to volunteerism in our community. My
husband Peter currently serves on the Oakland
Communications Commission as well as the newly established
Green Team. My daughters Amanda and Sarah are
products of the Oakland school system, and are graduates
of Indian Hills High School. While my daughters are
out of college and on their own, they still talk about how
much they enjoyed growing up in a town where they could
walk everywhere -- and still feel safe. Whenever I
go out walking, and that's almost daily, someone always
has a friendly wave for me. I love that about
Oakland.
Oakland, like every town in New Jersey, suffers from
a tough tax situation. This Council is cognizant of that
all the time. We are inches away from stabilizing
taxes, and to help accomplish that we are working with
surrounding towns to share services. As a
member of this council and resident of this Town, I too am
impacted by taxes and have been working hard to help
support the financial reforms that Oakland has undertaken
the past four years.
I
always look forward to talking with my Oakland neighbors
about their concerns and will continue to listen and to
educate myself on the issues that affect our future. I am
extremely pleased to be your representative on the Council
and hope that I can count on your support and for my
running mate Tim Jensen in this year’s election.”
